The audience is continually inundated with maddening footage of students being assaulted just for walking into a segregated school or sitting in a "whites only" restaurant, but the film's impact isn't predicated on an exhibition of violent videos and heartbreaking photos (like the open casket photo of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old black child who was tortured and murdered in 1955 for allegedly flirting with a white woman). They help set the framework for how that 13th amendment clause irreparably wove itself into the everyday social fabric of the 20th century.Īided with an abundance of archival photos and videos, the audience's mind is seared with images of the trauma that was the daily black experience in America from post-slavery years, to the tragic urban drug war in the ‘80s. a historian and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African-American Research at Harvard University.
